Every time I go to the fairy lit Rumour wine bar and restaurant in Totnes, I always get the urge to stay there all day eating and drinking. If it wasn’t for the draw of the surrounding market shops and stalls which offer unique gifts, quirky clothes, fine art and funny old antiques then I probably would. Rumour’s old beams, wooden bar and comfy seats make it warming and cosy, the staff are always friendly and upbeat and menu is seasonal, familiar and comforting. There’s not much not to like.It specialises in delicious build your own homemade pizzas which you can wash down with speciality local beers and wines. It also has an a la carte menu which changes regularly and includes things like Sticky back baby ribs, burgers and delicious curries. On my visit over Christmas, I shared two pizzas with my sister. A plain margherita costs £6.95 and toppings range from 75p-£2 each. Ours averaged about £12 for pizza. We had one topped with artichokes, pineapple, chorizo and olives and another with spinach, anchovies, serrano ham and fresh chillies. The base was pretty doughy and so not to my sisters taste but I enjoyed it and thought it was cleverly heavy enough to hold the deliciously rich tomato sauce, stringy cheeses and all of those yummy ingredients. All the vegetables felt full of flavour, fresh and were plentiful. I paired mine with a glass of wine from the local vineyard, Sharpham (read about my visit here) and it was simply delicious.
Rumour is perfect for a family get together or a lazy Saturday afternoon spent with friends. My family and I often head to the Barrel House up the road for coffee after our shop too.
