Brindisa is an institution, a long running establishment well known for placing brilliant Spanish food on the plates of those in the UK. Whether it’s the ingredients sold from their delightfully stylish shop in Borough Market, dinner in one of their low lit tapas bars or their wholesale service which supplies a number of well-known bars and restaurants, their brand guarantees a stamp of quality and deliciousness. Brindisa source their foods from 80 of Spain’s finest producers and their objective is simple: ‘to provide unbeatable Spanish food’. And that they do.
I walk past people eating the Charcuteria Selection (£12.50, photographed above) every day at the Tapas Brindisa in Borough. Normally I have to stop myself from nabbing a bit of delicate meat from the plates of those dining on the outside tables. Yesterday it was MINE, all mine! Well, it was my friend’s too but she didn’t really get a look in. Delicious smokey lomo, paprika rich chorizo, peppery salchichon and salty Teruel ham all melted in the mouth and went excellently with the fresh bread and vibrant olive oil. A brilliant start.
Onto the cheese section. Deep Fried Monte Enebro (£7.60 Goats cheese with orange blossom honey and crisp beetroot) was wonderful. The beetroot wasn’t really all that necessary, and I didn’t taste the orange blossom, but it didn’t matter, it was all about the beautiful soft, slightly chalky yet utterly creamy cheese doused in clear sweet honey. We ate the whole thing in minutes. We finished with silky smooth chicken liver pate, a steal at £3.50 a portion, and to add even more carbs to the dinner, a bowl of spicy, crisp Patatas Brava (£4).
The total bill for 2 with a bottle of rioja was £52 including service, a reasonably good value meal that sent my friend and I home contently full. The only thing that will put me off making this a regular haunt is the drastic waiting time quoted by the floor manager on arrival. We were told we’d have to wait for 1 hour for a table but within 10 minutes we’d been seated at a high table near the bar, perfect for casual dining. If you don’t fancy forking out £25 for dinner, pop to the shop in the market and create your own feast or join the queue for a chorizo sandwich at their outdoor chorizo grill.
